What to Expect During a Tummy Tuck Recovery Process

Image of woman’s flat tummy after recovery from tummy tuck surgery. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes extra skin and tightens muscles in the abdomen to give you a smoother midsection. Whether you’re getting ready for this procedure or are just beginning to consider it, it’s helpful to know what the recovery will be like so you can feel prepared.

At Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery & Aesthetics in Lone Tree, Colorado, our board-certified plastic surgeons will inform you of everything to expect before, during, and after surgery so you can feel good about your recovery process.

The First Few Days After Surgery

The first few days after your tummy tuck are all about rest and healing. You’ll likely feel some swelling, bruising, and tightness in your abdomen, which is completely normal. A compression garment will help reduce swelling and give support while you recover.

Your surgeon might place drains to help prevent fluid from building up. If you have these, we’ll provide you with clear instructions on how to care for them. Drains are usually removed within the first week.

Recovery Timeline

Everyone heals at their own pace, but here’s a general idea of what to expect during recovery:

  • Week 1: You’ll need plenty of rest, but we encourage light walking to help get your blood flowing. It will probably feel uncomfortable to stand fully upright, but this gets easier as the days go on.
  • Weeks 2–3: Many people start feeling better and can return to light activities or work. The swelling will start to go down, but you might still feel some tightness in your abdomen.
  • Weeks 4–6: You should be able to get back to most of your usual routine, but you’ll still need to avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise until your surgeon says it’s okay.
  • Months 2–3:  Swelling and scars will improve, and your abdomen will look flatter and more contoured, but you may not be 100% recovered yet.
  • Months 6-12: Most people will fully heal somewhere in this time range. Swelling will be gone, scars will fade, and you’ll be able to see your final results. You can enjoy your new tummy and return to all activities without restrictions.
